Disclosure basics

Does a candidate yard sign need a "paid for by" line in California?

Not when a candidate's own committee pays for it in the candidate's own race. The FPPC recommends it. Signs paid for by ballot-measure committees, PACs and independent-expenditure committees must carry "Ad paid for by" with the committee name, top funders where they apply, and each line at least 5% of the sign's height.

What does a campaign mailer need?

Any mailing of more than 200 substantially similar pieces in a month, including EDDM, is a mass mailing. Candidate and party committees must print "Paid for by" with the committee name, street address and city on the outside of every piece, at least 6-point type. Other committees use the disclosure box required on print ads.

Can Martian Creative give our campaign a discount?

Only the prices published on this site and promo codes offered to every customer, which are the same for everyone. A discount offered to one campaign and not the public counts as a contribution under California law, so private codes are refused on campaign orders.

Is campaign printing taxed?

Yes. Campaign literature is excluded from California's sales tax exemption for mailed advertising, so sales tax applies.

This is general information, not legal advice. The committee is responsible for its disclosures. For a specific piece, the FPPC's free advice line is 1-866-275-3772.
